If you touch the image of the lips you will be linked to a Wikipedia article about the product. The article is open and can be edited by everyone, the general public can therefore attach information to this bottle. The bottles and labels are all mass produced therefore this publicly curated information can be attached every bottle of Poland Spring water.

Is this a new kind of Graffiti? Can we use the branding and distribution of everyday objects to distribute information? Can we turn a brand against itself?

Bio-Bulb

Bio-Bulb is a biodegradable, self powering organic light source. The product uses, Vibrio fischeri a type of bio-luminescent bacteria, to produce an organic renewable light source.

Each bulb is spherical and can be aggregated to produces different types of lighting. When the bacteria deplete the nutrients in the bulb they die off and the biopolymer shell is disposed of. Each bulb is fully biodegradable.

Voronoi From 3d Curves

Recently I have been experimenting with generating 3D voronoi structures from points arrayed along curves. The voronoi cells follow the curve and define a continuous space around the curve. Essentially the voronoi is generating surfaces that define the space that falls between these knot like curves. Because of the density of the points along the curve these interesting surfaces are generated that are reminiscent of minimal surfaces.

Title: My_SECRET[E].Garden

This proposal for the Jardins de Métis garden festival by Francis Bitonti (FADstudio) and Andrew Zientek (Terrain Studios) uses augmented reality and other location based services to explore the notion of a secret garden . In the project Visitors, using their own smart-phones or those provided (and tethered), can view and create another dimension of the garden. The interface allows visitors to choose a new species of plant, attach a secret message and then “plant” it in the garden to be viewable by successive visitors. The garden grows, receiving and containing knowledge that is hidden from plain view. This virtual space laid over the physical landscape, tied to specific place through the technology of augmented reality. This digital evolution then spills back onto the physical as real plants are added, replacing digital versions. The garden starts with contained secrets, then writes them for others and finally translates them into material. The garden starts as subdued canvas and explodes with color.

Abstract::

This project explores how specific functions and applications can be designed into objects that are infinitely reconfigurable. Multi-Pede chair is an adjustable chair with no mechanical parts. The seat is designed around an electronically activated shape memory polymer (SMP) core. The use of this smart material allows for the elimination of complex mechanical systems while still creating an object that is continuously adjustable. Shape Memory Polymers and other smart materials can potentially bring about a class of objects wherein function is undefined or varied. This project is an exploration into how we can embed specific applications and uses into materials with ambiguous or fluctuating properties.

Abstract::

The project questions the finite state of common material assemblages by proposing a universal building block capable of iterative adaptation based on changes in social behaviors. Adjustment of the architectural form is enabled through the integration of code into building materials. This new construction methodology hybridizes software and hardware toward the creation of a new tectonic. The material assembly is designed to allow for reprogramming such that code becomes a medium for communication between the architecture and the user. Through serial revision the architecture becomes an ecology where organisms relate and respond to each other to create a working environment.

Multi-Pede Chair is an adjustable chair with no mechanical parts; the chair is designed around an Electroactive Shape Memory Polymer core. Plug the chair into a standard electrical outlet and watch its material properties transform from solid to elastic, stretch, twist and push your chair into a new configuration. Unplug and watch your new design solidify.

Any configuration is possible; the chair has hundreds of legs that cover its entire body. The legs change material, lengthen, shorten and change their section as they change orientation, at times they are legs and at other times they are seats. We have not designed a chair but hundreds of pieces of a chair. The material is infinitely reconfigurable; we can not rely on one sitting surface or one leg so we must create hundreds.

FADarch is pleased to have been part of this year’s annual DesCours (http://www.descours.us/) event in New Orleans. Francis Bitonti (FADarch) and Brian Osborn (bo-th.com) collaborated to construct a 500sqft robotic canopy titled “openHouse prototype two”

Concept:
openHouse is an illuminated canopy filling the upper portion of a small courtyard. As participants fill the courtyard the space is transformed by a field of kinetic devices. Our objective is to create a fluid public condition which is programmed by habitation and social interaction. Participants control the architecture through the seating. The ceiling is created from a grid of robotic components. The components randomly contract and expand while at rest. When the space is empty only one turns on at a time. As people begin to occupy the seating under the canopy, more components begin flickering on and off. Two people will cause three units to randomly dance around three people will activate four and four people will activate 5 etc…

Abridged Abstract:

This paper outlines a methodology for encoding and decoding material assemblages as discrete computational systems. Exploiting the combinatorial nature of tectonic systems makes it possible to produce a population of “material algorithms” capable of exhibiting a wide range of behaviors. Encoding assemblages as discrete systems affords the designer the ability to enumerate and search all possible permutations of a tectonic system. In this paper, we will discuss the calculations and computational processes used to encode material assemblages as populations of discrete algorithms.

Peter Macapia and Marilyn Garber of bridgegallery are pleased to present WildChild, a unique array of computationally experimental art, architecture and design involving the latest experiments in digital and algorithmic computing and advanced fabrication. Each of the designers in this exhibition have taught and evolved over the last decade using digital, animation, scripting, and parametric software tools. However, they have recently begun to develop idiosyncratic attitudes that continually defy easy categorization either in methodology or results. They are essentially ‘wild’ in their technical ambition and in their aesthetic. In that sense, the artists, designers, and architects in this exhibition are moving towards new theories, new territories, and new problems.

The extraordinary range of skill and technique exhibited through WildChild comes from a rigorous and continued manipulation of software tools branching into the generation of code, and producing exotic results. The question becomes how these processes result or impinge upon material considerations and aesthetic affect. Selecting work that represents major developments from New York City on the East Coast and Los Angeles on the West Coast, WildChild introduces a new generation of work tempered by the differences in urban environment as well as design sensibility and fabrication.

FADarch was invited to exhibt work in the 2009-2011 Advanced Architecture Settimo Tokyo Biennale.

The Rause Hill Natatorium Project will be exhibited from 7 April to 17 May 2009 in Turin, Italy.

The House of Arts and Architecture Association CASARTARC settled in Settimo Torinese, Turin, is developing a project called ‘Advanced Architecture Settimo Tokyo’ (AAST), a group of Generative Architecture events: workshops, a two days conference and an exhibition with venues in Settimo & Tokyo and possibly Cagliari & London.

The events of AAST focus on the approach to design through parametric design tools, such as Rhinoscript, Grasshopper, Mel script, DP, GC.

The first stage of the exhibition will run from 7 April to 17 May 2009 in Turin, Italy. The opening conference for the exhibition will be made by Patrik Schumacher (partner at Zaha Hadid Architects). The exhibition will travel to Tokyo, Japan in May 2010.

In this Demonstration the neighbors of each automaton in the center plot are defined by the network.

CityRacks Design Competition Finalist

Francis A. Bitonti has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the CityRacks Design Competition. FADarch has begun the production of two full scale prototypes that will be exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in Manhattan. The prototypes will then be installed on the streets of New York City for testing.

Hyper-Singular Rack:

The Traditional bike rack produces a linear or deterministic interface between the user and the object. The user always encounters the object in the same way and within the same context. The Hyper-Singular Rack on the other hand is non-deterministic. The users’ method of interface constantly needs to be re-evaluated as both orientation to the object and the context of that object is in a constant state of flux. This transforms our interaction with the object into an evolving pallet of interface. Dissolving our dependence on the singular and iconographic form; this forces the way we interface with the object to function more as a system. Our experience is dependent on the patterning of the objects most fundamental components. The structure of the object and its base components supersede the importance of the object itself.

The bike rack is composed of two prefabricated modules that can be combined with each other in a variety of ways. This affords a large amount of variability in the design, allowing the design to manifest itself differently throughout the city. The design utilizes three axis CNC milling technology and structural fiberglass to realize an affordable design that is 100% maintenance free.

I created this image and a series of diagrams for the Script/INE exhibition at the F.U.E.L Gallery in Philadelphia PA. This Exhibition will be on Display until September 7^th.
